COSTA RICA

I recently had the pleasure of experiencing Costa Rica for the first time! I came back a changed person because of the warmth of the people we experienced there. It was truly a "Pura Vida" experience!

Costa Rica was beyond our expectations – especially in terms of the warmth and genuine and sincere and passionate people we met along the way. We came back with such a greater appreciation for this lovely country and a true and deep respect for its people and culture.

We stayed at two amazing Virtuoso properties: Punta Islita in Guanacaste and El Silencio, high up in the rain forest.

Punta Islita is a casual lovely property on the beach. Most rooms have their own plunge pools and/or patios overlooking the ocean. Each room feels like a little slice of heaven and like your own little home away from home. Staff is warm, casual and friendly. It's a very open property with lots to explore on site.
El Silencio is high up in the rainforest. It is a luxury boutique property with approximately 37 rooms and 4 villas for rent (recently achieved a Relais & Chateaux designation) and really offers an eco-friendly, calm and relaxing, intimate, luxury wellness experience. All cabins have their own hot tub and patio, some even located Creekside. Beautifully furnished with local woods and their beds are about the best I have ever slept in!! A special turndown service is offered (but you must go to experience it!) nightly.
I would like to give a “shout out” to a few KEY personal who truly made our trip special:

Punta Islita:
  • Marvin Seas – gave such a thorough and wonderful site inspection of the property. He was eager to ask and answer questions and really gave us an in-depth tour and understanding of the property and surrounding area. Thank you Marvin! What a great job you do! You deserve a promotion! Super professional, super kind! J
  • Johan – at Harry’s bar – he has such a great attitude and personality! Really felt like we made a new friend. Wonderful sense of humor!
  • Eduardo – with the Zip Line tours – he was very respectful and asked a lot of questions about my business, clients and agency. We loved the zip line tour. A must do!
  • Eduardo’s partner with the Turtle tour – (sorry forgot his name) – he was super gracious on the evening Turtle tour and explained a lot. What a great experience and a must do for anyone going there in season.
  • Carlos– the chef who does the Cooking Class – he was very patient and we had a lot of fun with him- enjoyed what we learned.
  • Miquel at CoCo Beach bar – what a gem! He needs a raise. His zest for life and care of his clients shine bright. We really enjoyed him.
  • Julio – waiter in the restaurant – what a sweet gentleman. He even offered me to use his jacket during the Turtle tour. What a sweet man!
  • Antonio –Helped us at breakfast and then for lunch at CoCo Beach. Has such a lovely personality and sense of humor.
  • Edgar – dinner waiter – he is really good at his job and knows how to keep an eye on his tables and their needs
  • Luis – front desk. He was very good at explaining everything and always ready to answer and questions or make changes and never seemed bothered by anything, thank you Luis.

El Silencio
  • William – He checked us in and was always ready to lend a hand, make a change or accommodate us in anyway. He was really super! Warm and super friendly.
  • Ronald – Coffee Tour/Tasting class – Was amazing – his passion for what he does is so apparent and we really enjoyed spending time with him and learning more about CR coffee and tradition! It is a must do.
  • Roberto-Bird tour and Waterfall hike – Another gem – what a beautiful and humble person this guy is. He does such a great job and we are super proud of all of his accomplishments.
  • Martin -Waiter for breakfast and lunch. What a charming gentleman. Friendly, great with details, personal and an overall great guy. Very accommodating.
  • Francesco – Again a very gracious host, super accommodating and generous in spirit.
  • Sergio – Super eager to learn and eager to please. Friendly and kind.
  • Vincincio (sp?) – gave us a mini site tour of the local town and showed us the Suites. He answered a lot of questions and also took us on the 4 Elements tour. He is passionate about nature and care of the earth and this came through loud and clear. Super humble and kind. We enjoyed our time with him.

I need to mention all of our drivers who were all AMAZING and very enjoyable!
  • Bernie – took us from San Jose to Punta Islita at night upon arrival! Oh man, does he know how to drive in the dark. So glad we got a driver and did not try and do this on our own. He was super accommodating.
  • Steve Mauricio – took us from Punta Islita to Nayara, then The Springs Resort for sites and onto El Silencio. He was such a dear man. Kind, informative, great English, super accommodating and patient! We really appreciated his super long day and patience as I explored other properties on the way to El Silencio.
  • Eric/Eddie (as he called himself) – Super informative, was like a tour guide along our route from El Silencio to San Jose. I even got an email from him after the trip asking if we made it home ok! He was very funny, inquisitive, honest and shared a lot about the country. He has a great command of the English language. Very impressed!

Lastly, I have put together a mini-album via Facebook and will be doing some posts on my own website once I get caught up and am glad to share them with any/all of you. If you have a moment, click here: Costa Rica

Like so many other parents this Fall, my husband and I became “Empty Nesters”. Our baby girl, and youngest of three was heading off to college and we were faced with the reality of being alone for the first time in 26 years. We decided that this was a life milestone that we should observe, rather than dread. We had spent years devoting endless time and energy to our children and now they were all out in the world as healthy, happy, productive members of society. We had much to celebrate. So, after dropping our daughter off at college we traveled to Montana’s Paradise Valley and spent a few days at Sage Lodge to mark this special occasion. Montana’s Paradise Valley starts near Livingston, which sits on I-90, and stretches south along highway 89 towards Yellowstone National Park. It is the major river valley of the Yellowstone River and is flanked by the Gallatin and Absaroka Ranges. Highway 89 was the original entrance into Yellowstone National Park, although there are now two additional entrances, one each in Montana and Wyoming. Along with its unmatched beauty and world-class fly fishing on the river, the valley also offers other natural wonders such as several natural hot springs.

Ernest Hemingway once described Switzerland as “a small, steep country, much more up and down than sideways, and stuck all over with large brown hotels built on the cuckoo clock style of architecture.” Susan’s recent travels between Geneva and Zurich proves that a lot has changed in the Swiss hotel scene since Hemingway’s observation. While she has lots of experience setting up pre- and post-river cruise activities and private trips in the area, this “self-imposed” familiarization was to acquaint herself with Virtuoso’s Swiss properties. Susan’s excited to share her thoughts on this diverse list of hotels, as well as the historic cities they call home.

This past fall, Susan was invited to sit on the Advisory Board for the German National Tourism Offices out of New York City. In partnership to boost tourism to Germany, she toured two of the country’s most iconic cities. From the eclectic coffee and artistic scenes of Hamburg, to an exploration of the tumultuous history of Berlin, there was a lot to take in. Susan hopes her journey will shed light on why Germany should be the destination of your next European vacation. Below you’ll find some incredible places to stay, cuisine to sample, and experiences that will put the discovery of German culture at the forefront of your travels.

With Paris and Rome, London forms the trifecta of must-visit cities for those first taking the dive into European culture. A hub of history, politics, architecture (both very old and very new), and the arts, London has a little bit to offer everyone. This November, Susan had the opportunity to tour over a dozen of the city’s best boutique hotels so you know where to stay during your visit. In addition, Susan also toured some of the charming villages that surround London that are perfect for a day trip, or quick weekend, to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. She hopes her exploration of this British metropolis will help you know where to start when planning your first (or next) European getaway.
