Quick 3 country tour: Germany, France, Netherlands

The 3 country tour: Germany, France and Netherlands

I recently was accepted as a "hosted buyer" at a lovely show (International Luxury Travel Mart) in Cannes, France and did a super quick 3 country tour in a week. While on this trip, I did some "homework" and "shopping" for you my dear clients. It's tough work but someone must do it! :-)

Making a quick stop in Frankfurt, I was able to do a quick site inspection at the amazing Rocco Forte Villa Kennedy where they were all decorated for Christmas already.

Once a grand family home, Villa Kennedy is now the embodiment of a modern Frankfurt. Built in 1904, the hotel was renamed in honour of President John F Kennedy's visit in 1963. It has been extensively restored but still retains its family feel. The tranquil Villa garden in the centre is ideal for alfresco dinner and drinks in the warmer months.

Villa Kennedy is a short stroll from Museum Embankment and a mere 10-minute drive from the airport, which makes it ideal for business conferences and events. Private parking is also available on site.

I have stayed at this property before in 2013 and fell in love with it. It's charming, warm, friendly without being stuffy. Breakfast is amazing here and the bar/dining area is a great place to meet colleagues, and friends, old and new. The rooms are spacious, details are impeccable and many rooms offer a balcony and look out over an amazing courtyard.
From there I headed directly to Cannes for the bulk of the week attending a conference having approximately 20 meetings a day meeting with suppliers from Europe mainly but a host of other vendors. While in Cannes, I had the opportunity to experience the Grand Hyatt Cannes Hôtel Martinez personally as well as attend functions at a few other properties. Cannes is delightful in December with a balmy Mediterranean climate.

Situated in a prime location on the exclusive Boulevard de la Croisette, overlooking the Bay of Cannes and the Mediterranean Sea, the luxury 5 star Grand Hyatt Cannes Hôtel Martinez benefits from Cannes’ status as France’s second most important city for business tourism and is one of the prime destinations for exhibitions and conventions.

Providing authentic hospitality, the hotel’s long and rich history, culture and timeless architectural beauty has long established itself as the flagship luxury hotel on the Cannes Riviera. Today, its timeless beauty, elegance and sophistication continue to ensure it is one of the top European luxury hotels. Our 5 star hotel consists of 409 luxury guestrooms, including 27 suites and one of the largest suites in Europe, the Penthouse Suite. The Grand Hyatt Cannes Hôtel Martinez features the largest private beach on the Croisette and the only 2-star Michelin gastronomic restaurant in Cannes. The hotel is also home to the L.Raphael Spa. Boasting 2,500 square meters of conference space, it is one of the city’s largest conference facilities.
Next stop was a quick overnight near Bandol, visiting long time dear friends, owners of Mas de Brun and French Word A Day. While there, we had an afternoon to take in the village of Sanary-sur-Mer and enjoy a bit of the holiday cheer in this lovely port city.
Last but not least was our final stop in Amsterdam for a quick 24 tour and site inspection. We had the pleasure of visiting and staying at the Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam and were treated like royalty there. Our room was upgrade to a suite which offered a private entrance from the canal side of the hotel. Rooms were large, very spacious and appointed with luxurious detail and flare, complete with a heated toilet seat and bathroom floors. That comes in handy on a cold DEC night. A quick two hours tour through the city and an in-depth tour at the Anne Frank House with a lovely company Critics Choice Vacations uses often, called ITB Holland, They offered a very well rounded tour, an excellent driver (as the streets and roads were packed) and a great guide overall.
Europe is great to visit any month of the year, but I must confess December holds a special magic! As most of your know, Critics Choice Vacations sells the world, but Europe is our passion and main specialty. It's not too late to start making plans for 2016!

Like so many other parents this Fall, my husband and I became “Empty Nesters”. Our baby girl, and youngest of three was heading off to college and we were faced with the reality of being alone for the first time in 26 years. We decided that this was a life milestone that we should observe, rather than dread. We had spent years devoting endless time and energy to our children and now they were all out in the world as healthy, happy, productive members of society. We had much to celebrate. So, after dropping our daughter off at college we traveled to Montana’s Paradise Valley and spent a few days at Sage Lodge to mark this special occasion. Montana’s Paradise Valley starts near Livingston, which sits on I-90, and stretches south along highway 89 towards Yellowstone National Park. It is the major river valley of the Yellowstone River and is flanked by the Gallatin and Absaroka Ranges. Highway 89 was the original entrance into Yellowstone National Park, although there are now two additional entrances, one each in Montana and Wyoming. Along with its unmatched beauty and world-class fly fishing on the river, the valley also offers other natural wonders such as several natural hot springs.

Ernest Hemingway once described Switzerland as “a small, steep country, much more up and down than sideways, and stuck all over with large brown hotels built on the cuckoo clock style of architecture.” Susan’s recent travels between Geneva and Zurich proves that a lot has changed in the Swiss hotel scene since Hemingway’s observation. While she has lots of experience setting up pre- and post-river cruise activities and private trips in the area, this “self-imposed” familiarization was to acquaint herself with Virtuoso’s Swiss properties. Susan’s excited to share her thoughts on this diverse list of hotels, as well as the historic cities they call home.

This past fall, Susan was invited to sit on the Advisory Board for the German National Tourism Offices out of New York City. In partnership to boost tourism to Germany, she toured two of the country’s most iconic cities. From the eclectic coffee and artistic scenes of Hamburg, to an exploration of the tumultuous history of Berlin, there was a lot to take in. Susan hopes her journey will shed light on why Germany should be the destination of your next European vacation. Below you’ll find some incredible places to stay, cuisine to sample, and experiences that will put the discovery of German culture at the forefront of your travels.

With Paris and Rome, London forms the trifecta of must-visit cities for those first taking the dive into European culture. A hub of history, politics, architecture (both very old and very new), and the arts, London has a little bit to offer everyone. This November, Susan had the opportunity to tour over a dozen of the city’s best boutique hotels so you know where to stay during your visit. In addition, Susan also toured some of the charming villages that surround London that are perfect for a day trip, or quick weekend, to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. She hopes her exploration of this British metropolis will help you know where to start when planning your first (or next) European getaway.
